Navient Foundation contributes $7,500 to House of Heroes to help repair the homes of veterans

WILMINGTON, Del., March 28, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For the past 16 years, House of Heroes has been making life easier for our nation's military and public safety veterans, including police officers and firefighters. The nonprofit organization performs repairs and improvements to the homes of veterans and their spouses who are disabled, living on a fixed income or face other challenges. The veterans service organization recently began assisting military and public service veterans in Delaware with the goal of establishing an official chapter in the First State this year.

Navient Foundation, the company-sponsored philanthropic fund, has contributed $7,500 to the organization to support their mission of honoring and serving military and public safety veterans.

House of Heroes National Chairman and Wilmington native Bill May welcomed Navient's support of the House of Heroes mission.

"I am thrilled to welcome the Navient Foundation to the House of Heroes family, particularly here in my home state of Delaware," said May, a 24-year U.S. Army veteran and former Black Hawk helicopter pilot. "Navient's generous support represents a huge step forward in further establishing House of Heroes' roots and impact here in Delaware, and we are excited about partnering together to ‘Make a Difference in a Day' in the lives of Delaware veterans."

House repairs include cleaning, painting, installation of access ramps and screen windows, replacement of basic appliances and many other forms of assistance. Repairs come at no cost to the veteran and are performed with the help of volunteers led by skilled project leaders who guide others on the basics of home improvements. Since 2000, more than 900 veterans have been assisted in 17 states.

"Though we can never truly compensate veterans for their great sacrifice, we can assist them in making life a little bit easier," said Mike Maier, senior vice president, Navient, and U.S. Navy veteran. "We are proud to help support House of Heroes and express our gratitude for their service."

Navient is committed to increasing opportunities for veterans. Navient is a member of the Veteran Jobs Mission, a coalition of companies that have pledged to hire more veterans. In addition, Navient hosts a Veterans Resource Group, an employee-led talent development program to support military veterans and their careers.
